Spectral analysis of data noise is performed in the context of gravity field recovery from inter-satellite ranging measurements acquired by the satellite gravimetry mission GRACE. The motivation of the study is two-fold: (i) to promote a further improvement of GRACE data processing techniques and (ii) to assist designing GRACE follow-on missions. The analyzed noise realizations are produced as the difference between the actual GRACE inter-satellite range measurements and the predictions based on state-of-the-art force models. The exploited functional model is based on the so-called “range combinations,” which can be understood as a finite-difference analog of inter-satellite accelerations projected onto the line-of-sight connecting the satellites. It is shown that low-frequency noise is caused by limited accuracy of the computed GRACE orbits. In the first instance, it leads to an inaccurate estimation of the radial component of the inter-satellite velocities. A large impact of this component stems from the fact that it is directly related to centrifugal accelerations, which have to be taken into account when the measured range-accelerations are linked with inter-satellite accelerations. Another effect of orbit inaccuracies is a miscalculation of forces acting on the satellites (particularly, the one described by the zero-degree term of the Earth’s gravitational field). The major contributors to the noise budget at high frequencies (above 9 mHz) are (i) ranging sensor errors and (ii) limited knowledge of the Earth’s static gravity field at high degrees. Importantly, we show that updating the model of the static field on the basis of the available data must be performed with a caution as the result may not be physical due to a non-unique recovery of high-degree coefficients. The source of noise in the range of intermediate frequencies (1–9 mHz), which is particularly critical for an accurate gravity field recovery, is not fully understood yet. We show, however, that it cannot be explained by inaccuracies in background models of time-varying gravity field. It is stressed that most of the obtained results can be treated as sufficiently general (i.e., applicable in the context of a statistically optimal estimation based on any functional model).@en

This study will assess the feasibility of using a constellation of non-dedicated satellites to determine Earth's time-variable gravity field. Precise orbit data from the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellite constellation will be processed and the results will be compared to theoretical predictions. Provided accurate knowledge of the satellite orbits through GPS positioning only, the constellation should be able to provide information about the large scale (> 1000 km), high frequency (< 1 month) variations in the gravity field. The concept would also provide current and future dedicated gravity field missions with valuable information at the low degrees, thereby improving the overall recovery of the full spectrum of time-variable gravity. This is valuable not only for Earth observation, but for topics in mission design and orbit determination.@en

A thermal laser thruster depends on introduction of a high energy laser beam, absorption by the fluid propellant, confinement of the hot propellant gas with minimal losses, and conversion of thermal to kinetic energy in the nozzle. Based on thermodynamic constraints, efficient energy conversion is possible in either the subsonic Laser Supported Combustion (LSC) wave in a converging diverging nozzle or the supersonic Laser Supported Detonation (LSD) wave in a diverging nozzle configuration. A short discussion of both mechanisms is presented. Thruster modeling was performed. The results of steady laser heated LSD flows using LiH as propellant assuming finite rate chemistry are presented. @en

Ground to orbit launch using laser propulsion requires a thermal system. Physically allowed thermal concepts are discussed and compared. It is argued that the laser supported detonation (LSD) mechanism presents a number of advantages over the alternatives. Numerical simulations of ascent trajectories for a system based on the LSD mechanism were performed to gain insight into the mechanics of laser propulsion and the influence of the most relevant mission parameters. Comparison with the Lightcraft flight data was made and it is shown that the 70 meter height limit is due to excessive laser diffraction. A hypothetical 10 km Lightcraft simulation employing existing technology is presented. @en

It is widely known that producing a single stage to orbit spacecraft is no easy task. It is also understood that it will be the first steady step towards spacecraft that operate in much the same way as today's airliners. This, in turn is believed to decrease the economical cost of reaching space through more efficient use of a single vehicle and higher launch rates. Space is then open to the common man, either through tourism or as a transportation medium. This paper is yet another study on the physical requirements of a SSTO spacecraft. It will begin with simple assumptions and gradually build up accuracy until reaching the use of a numerical simulation tool, so as to provide the necessary insight into it. The curvature of the Earth, its gravitational field, the exhaust pressure loss and atmospheric drag are a few of the considerations that the simulation takes into account. No attention was give to the actual details of the spacecraft such as propulsion type(s), winged or lifting body (aerodynamics), active or passive cooling (thermodynamics), stability and control. All these subsystems are considered to be included into the construction mass. The drag model is a simple textbook approximation and the propulsion force is given by a hypothetical propellant and engine so as to produce the assumed range of specific impulse. Even the construction mass is supposed to be futuristic so as to reach the lowest specified values. Not only vertical take-off will be simulated but also horizontal launching from altitude (from a towing aircraft, for example). The result of the paper shows the relationship between the construction mass and the specific impulse of a given spacecraft if it is to reach low earth orbit. This paper thus aims at bringing some light to the controversial discussion of how to make these vehicles a reality. The simulation program (Matlab) is available to students. @en
