Hiermee kan de dwarskrachtcapaciteit worden vergroot. Bij deze toepassing is de hechting tussen het oude en het nieuwe beton van groot belang. In een bachelor eindproject aan de TU Delft is gekeken of de delaminatie tussen normaal beton en UHPFRC met infrarood thermografie kan worden beoordeeld.@en

The adaptive control of sunlight through photochromic smart windows could have a huge impact on the energy efficiency and daylight comfort in buildings. However, the fabrication of inorganic nanoparticle and polymer composite photochromic films with a high contrast ratio and high transparency/low haze remains a challenge. Here, a solution method is presented for the in situ growth of copper-doped tungsten trioxide nanoparticles in polymethyl methacrylate, which allows a low-cost preparation of photochromic films with a high luminous transparency (luminous transmittance T_lum = 91%) and scalability (30 × 350 cm²). High modulation of visible light (ΔT_lum = 73%) and solar heat (modulation of solar transmittance ΔT_sol = 73%, modulation of solar heat gain coefficient ΔSHGC = 0.5) of the film improves the indoor daylight comfort and energy efficiency. Simulation results show that low-e windows with the photochromic film applied can greatly enhance the energy efficiency and daylight comfort. This photochromic film presents an attractive strategy for achieving more energy-efficient buildings and carbon neutrality to combat global climate change.

The type of glazing implemented in a building plays an important role in the heat management of a building. Solar heat entering through glazing causes overheating of interior spaces and increases building’s cooling load. In this work, the energy saving potential of window films based on Cholesteric Liquid Crystals (CLC) is explored. This emerging technology allows for the fabrication of static and thermochromic solar heat rejecting window films and can provide a simple renovation solution towards energy efficient buildings. Simulations on a model office showed that static CLC-based window films can save up to 29% on a building’s annual energy use in warm climates. In climates with distinct summer and winter seasons, static solar heat rejecting windows films cause an additional heating demand during winters, which reduces the annual energy savings. In these climates, the benefit of thermochromic CLC-based window films becomes evident and an annual energy saving up to 22% can be achieved.@en

Energy-efficient buildings tend to cause thermal discomfort due to overheating during summers. With the advent of climate change and increasing outdoor temperatures, the risk of overheating will be exacerbated. Henceforth, the building design must be future proof or robust for climate change. Passive design strategies applied to the building envelope are crucial in reducing the energy demand and provide thermal comfort. However, it is essential to determine their performance in the presence of climate uncertainties, especially in the early design stage. Therefore, the paper illustrates an assessment method for investigating the robustness of the building envelope in curbing the risk of overheating in future climate change scenarios of 2050 and 2085. The study focused on educational buildings as thermal discomfort due to overheating affects students' productivity. The study analysed the performance of different passive design strategies applicable at building envelope in reducing overheating risk and evaluated the robustness using the statistical method of “best-case and worst-case scenario”. The robustness assessment method found fixed or dynamic shading, reduced window to wall ratios, albedo effect of the building envelope, and mixed-mode ventilation strategy with P.C.M. panels as the most robust design solutions. Climate change will lead to more warm and hot days in the Netherlands. Climate adaptation measures are needed to reduce the vulnerability of urban areas. Moreover, proven adaptation measures, such as increased vegetated areas or water surfaces, are not always possible due to a lack of space or undesired aesthetic effects. An alternative option is to make use of coloured façades to create drafts and accelerate wind speed in a street canyon or on a square to attract fresh air from cooler places. Differences in colour and material types already influence the air flow in street canyons in an uncontrolled manner. If this thermal comfort principle can be implemented, it will potentially have a significant impact on many cities throughout the world. This paper presents the results of a first exploratory research based on measurements on scale models and at full scale. This pilot study indicates success of the intended draft principle, advocating further research.
