This research advances the theoretical foundation by presenting a practical and comprehensive design approach for Connected and Autonomous Transport (CAT) systems. Using a morphological chart, this paper decomposes the complex elements of CAT systems into sub-functions, each offering multiple feasible options. By blending theoretical perspectives with practical insights, this study addresses a gap in literature, which has largely centered on vehicle autonomy functions, mathematical algorithms, and the broader benefits and impacts of autonomous vehicles.
The presentation will be of interest to TRB Meeting Attendees as it will help them to recognize the key elements of innovation and deployment projects for autonomous vehicles by various technology suppliers and logistics industry partners. In this phase, the number of different design parameters and options is enormous as most projects provide customized solutions. In the coming years, it is expected that dominant designs will emerge, but until then, the morphological chart will help attendees to identify and understand the differences between these designs and solutions.

In the last few years, online shopping has been increasing rapidly. Optimising the sorting processes in E-fulfilment centres, combined with direct parcel delivery from the E-fulfilment centres to the close-by customers has not been widely studied in a quantitative manner. The main objective is to show whether E-fulfilment centres can generate a reduction in costs for parcel delivery.

Two models are used to calculate the cost savings by using of an E-fulfilment centre. The volume of parcels has a crucial role in the calculation (and the competitiveness) of delivery costs. The time-driven performance reaches a break-even point for the volumes that can compete with the logistics providers. The impacts of directly delivering parcels from an e-fulfilment centre to nearby customers result in lower greenhouse gas emissions.@en

The number of activities in city logistics is growing rapidly causing an increase in emissions, and a decline in accessibility and safety in cities. Therefore, the Dutch government has introduced GreenDeal Zero-emission city logistics. The goal of this deal is to have 30-40 of the biggest municipalities in the Netherlands have zero-emission city logistics in 2025. The goal for 2025 is clear, but it lacks a way for municipalities to see their progress and a way to find improvements in their city logistics. This research is focused on developing a maturity model as a tool to assess the maturity level of a municipality for its performance-related city logistics process management to achieve its aim of reaching zero emissions. The
City Logistics Maturity Model for Municipality (CL3M) requires a domain-specific, multidimensional model to assess city logistics from a municipal point of view. The model includes six levels (0-5) and a PCDA cycle is embedded throughout the levels. The model is populated through three focus fields (Technical, Social and Corporate, and Policy), branching out into six areas of development: Information and communication technology, urban logistics planning, Stakeholder communication, Public-Private Partnerships, Subsidization and incentivization, and Regulations. The CL3M model was tested for three municipalities, namely, the municipality of Deventer, Zwolle, and Nijmegen. The paper aims to identify customers' preferences toward last-mile delivery in e-commerce in Poland and Brazil and diagnoses the drivers and barriers to implement solutions for sustainable last-mile delivery. In order to achieve this aim, a survey was conducted among e-customers in Poland and Brazil, and data were analysed using conjoint analysis. Additionally, an expert panel was established to identify barriers and drivers for implementing last-mile delivery solutions. For Polish customers, price is the most important, while for Brazilian customers, home delivery. The essential barriers inhibiting the implementation of sustainable lastmile delivery solutions are lack of regulation, insufficient green energy sources, the high price of electric vehicles, and fear of their short lifetime. Support from the local government was identified as a primary driver, followed by the organization of free delivery to parcel lockers/pick-up points and education and training of all stakeholders@en

Twee jaar geleden zijn we gestart met de ontwikkeling van het Sprong consortium Greening Corridors. De focus van Greening Corridors richt zich enerzijds op het verduurzamen van achterlandverbindingen en anderzijds het ontwikkelen van een sterk consortium. Dit artikel laat zien hoe welke partijen in het consortium participeren. De inhoudelijke kant heeft geleid tot verschillende projecten die langs de thema’s: (1) betere benutting van capaciteit; (2) schone, veilige en autonome modaliteiten; (3) Digitalisering in de toeleveringsketen tot stand zijn gekomen. Voor wat betreft het consortium zijn diverse acties uitgevoerd voor verdere ontwikkeling van het consortium zelf. Daar is de focus op de gebieden:(1) profilering; (2) professionaliteit & personeelsplanning; (3) netwerk; (4) kwaliteit en (5) impact en doorwerking. Beide ontwikkelpaden leiden er toe dat Greening Corridors zich begint te ontwikkelen als een herkenbare entiteit en een belangrijke rol spelen in de verduurzaming van achterlandverbindingen.

De historische zeilschepen van de ‘bruine vloot’ varen grotendeels duurzaam zeilend, maar
hebben aan boord ook oude dieselmotoren waarvoor – wanneer deze nu kapotgaan of op
termijn wanneer strengere eisen aan uitstoot en geluid het gebruik ervan gaan beperken –
schippers moderne en duurzame alternatieven moeten overwegen. Dit gaat om grote
investeringen in bijvoorbeeld een moderne Stage 5 dieselmotor of een batterij-elektrisch
systeem met een elektromotor en batterijpakketten. Om de investeringsopgave en
kostenstructuur van deze motoren inzichtelijk te maken wordt in dit rapport een Total Cost
of Ownership (TCO)-analyse gemaakt van de deze twee alternatieven. Het rapport
beschrijft de TCO berekening voor een schip met een veronderstelde
voortstuwingsbehoefte en vaargedrag, met daarbij enkele gevoeligheidsanalyses.
Bijgevoegd is een eenvoudig rekenmodel waarmee schippers of investeerders de
parameters van de berekening kunnen aanpassen op hun eigen situatie.
De analyse laat zien dat op dit moment de investeringskosten van een batterij-elektrisch
systeem doorgaans hoger liggen dan die van een Stage 5 dieselmotor. Hierbij is de prijs
van de accupakketten de belangrijkste kostenpost. In het meest gunstige scenario, waarin
de schipper toe kan met een relatief kleine (doch afdoende) actieradius, en de batterijen
een lange levensduur hebben, en ook nog een zekere restwaarde in hergebruik of recycling
is de investering in een batterij-elektrisch systeem vergelijkbaar met de investering in een
Stage 5 diesel. Een rekenvoorbeeld van een Battery-as-a-Service model, waarbij schippers
jaarlijks een accupakket kunnen leasen, laat zien dat ook hierbij de huidige kilowattuurprijs
van batterijen deze optie relatief kostbaar maakt ten opzichte van een Stage 5 diesel.
Echter, wanneer de prijs van energieopslag dezelfde neerwaartse trend laat zien als in de
markt voor batterij-elektrische voertuigen, komt er een omslagpunt.
Onder andere hierom is elektrische voortstuwing een duurzamere lange termijn-oplossing
dan een dieselmotor. Ook de modernste dieselmotoren zullen eerder of later te veel geluid
en/of uitstoot produceren om nog aan (wettelijke landelijke en lokale) eisen te voldoen,
terwijl een elektromotor schoon en stil draait. Ook stelt een elektromotor schippers in staat
om te profiteren van de ontwikkelingen in de markt voor energieopslag, waarin we dalende
prijzen en een groeiend aanbod van alternatieven (bijvoorbeeld zoutbatterijen en
brandstofcellen) kunnen verwachten.
Bij beide onderzochte alternatieven worden schippers geconfronteerd met hoge
investeringskosten. Deze moeten gedekt worden, bijvoorbeeld door subsidies en/of
tariefverhogingen – waarbij idealiter een schoon en stil schip onderdeel kan worden van
de propositie richting passagiers, en op termijn een standaard in de sector, tegen een
eerlijke prijs.@en

The e-commerce market is dynamically growing. Attractive purchase prices, low cost, short delivery time, and convenient delivery places motivate consumers to shop online. In turn, the free return possibility motivates customers to buy more and more products and then return them to the retailer. As a result, courier companies face increasing challenges regarding return logistics in e-commerce. According to Hazen (2011), return logistics focuses on the backward flow of products from customers to suppliers. Rogers and Tibben-Lembke (1999) defined it as “the process of planning, implementing, and controlling the efficient, cost-effective flow of raw materials, inprocess inventory, finished goods and related information from the point of consumption to the point of origin to recapture value or proper disposal”. Most of the research focuses on forward logistics (Stock et al.,2002; Bernon and Cullen, 2007) or last-mile delivery in terms of cities (Burlando & Vella, 2021). There are not many papers which are related to sustainable return logistics (Wenjuan, 2015; Velazquez, Chankov, 2019). This paper aims to identify the preferences of e-customers and the possibility of their change in return logistics to organize it sustainably. To achieve this goal, the conjoint analysis was applied based on a survey conducted among 1,100 e-customers in Poland and 500 e-customers in Brazil. In the research the fuzzy methods will be applied as: fuzzy cognitive maps that is usually used to structuring the research problem and fuzzy taxonomy that allows us to analyse in more deeply sense the preferences of e-customers. The rapid growth of online shopping and B2C transactions, coupled with the increased demand for doorstep deliveries, has made last-mile delivery a major concern in the e-commerce industry. Traditional delivery methods are costly and unsustainable, leading to a rise in greenhouse gas emissions due to the increasing number of delivery vehicles. Parcel lockers at a public transportation location are one of the potential solutions for this problem. However, due to involvement of different stakeholders, it is important to consider perspective of these stakeholders before implementing a parcel locker. The research proposes a framework based on the MCDM methodology, particularly the Multi-Attribute-Multi-Criteria Analysis (MAMCA) approach using the best-worst method. A case of Beurs metro station in the city of Rotterdam is evaluated using the proposed framework. The result of case study concludes that parcel delivery companies and receivers are (highly) positive 142% and 119% respectively) for parcel locker delivery system at public transport location. However, the public transport operator is not very positive (only 5%) about installing lockers at the transport location. The transport operator is mostly concern about passenger safety as it shows negative perception in the result. The limited space available at the busy transport location, combined with the high volume of passengers using public transport, make it difficult to find suitable areas to install the lockers without impeding passenger flow demands meticulous planning and optimisation of available space. The result shows that safety is also concern of the receivers and the parcel delivery company. The research shows how the proposed framework can be used to assess bottleneck criteria for successful implementation of parcel lockers. @en

Het aantal activiteiten in de stadslogistiek groeit snel, waardoor de uitstoot toeneemt en de bereikbaarheid en veiligheid in steden afnemen. Volgend op de Green Deal Zero-emissie stadslogistiek (ZES) is daarom in het Klimaatakkoord afgesproken om tot zero emissie stadslogistiek te komen. Concreet betekent dit, dat 30 tot 40 van de grootste gemeenten in Nederland in 2025 een zero emissie zone voor stadslogistiek moeten invoeren. Veel gemeenten zijn druk met de voorbereidingen van de zones, maar in de praktijk ontbreekt het hen aan de mogelijkheid om hun voortgang te kunnen zien en deze te ijken met andere gemeenten. Om hier inzicht in te verkrijgen is het stadslogistiek maturity model ontwikkeld. We hebben dit model in 2022 getest voor drie gemeenten, namelijk de gemeente Deventer, Zwolle en Nijmegen@en

This paper delves into the zero-emission city logistics readiness of businesses located in the earmarked Dutch inner cities, which are gearing up towards decreasing the emissions attributable to urban logistics activities. Emission reduction is to be achieved by rolling out mandated zero-emission zones which are to be implemented in 30-40 Dutch cities from the 1st January 2025, with the dates set and municipalities planning towards the banning of diesel-fuelled commercial vehicles. This research seeks to determine the extent of zero-emission operational maturity by use of the zero-emission maturity model by examining the four biggest cities in the southern Dutch Province of Noord Brabant. The research shows a low level of awareness among companies in the cities of Eindhoven, Breda, ’s-Hertogenbosch, and Tilburg and calls for better methods of information dissemination, especially among the small to medium businesses who don't consider city logistics as their core business.@en

De komende jaren zullen steden meer en meer te maken krijgen met uitdagingen op het gebied van vervoer in termen van toegankelijkheid, ruimtegebruik en duurzaamheid. Het passagiers- en goederenvervoer zullen naar verwachting toenemen, terwijl de transportsector een belangrijke bijdrage levert aan de uitstoot van broeikasgassen en congestie in steden. Hoewel beide ecosystemen (personenvervoer en vrachtvervoer) historisch gezien met elkaar verweven waren, hebben de ecosystemen zich de afgelopen eeuw afzonderlijk van elkaar ontwikkeld. Dit onderzoek richt zich op het vinden van geïntegreerde logistieke stromen en logistieke innovaties en vooral op het vinden van de voorwaarden waaronder deze kunnen worden toegevoegd aan verschillende soorten mobiliteitsknooppunten. Door informatie uit literatuur en interviews te verzamelen en te structureren met behulp van een behoefteanalyse, werd het mogelijk om wijk-/stad-/buiten stad-hubs te definieren. Met deze raamwerken is gekeken welke logistieke functies hieraan toegevoegd kunnen worden. De raamwerken zijn empirisch getest en gevalideerd door studenten van de Hogeschool Rotterdam voor verschillende metrostations in Rotterdam. De raamwerken geven duidelijk sturing wat men zou kunnen ontwikkelen op het gebied van integratie van personen- en goederenvervoer. @en

Learning communities kunnen een middel zijn om bij vraagstukken zoals logistiek in de leefbare stad, in een publiek-privaat samenwerkingsverband te leren, problemen op te lossen en te innoveren. Vanuit het CoE KennisDC Logistiek is door vier hogescholen de Learning Community Logistiek in de Leefbare Stad uitgevoerd. Op basis van het Conceptueel raamwerk Publiek-Private Learning Communities wordt gereflecteerd hierop. Hieruit zijn inzichten gekomen voor de verdere uitrol van het concept learning communities binnen het CoE KennisDC Logistiek. De learning community logistiek in de leefbare stad heeft een mooie rijkheid aan hedendaags praktijkgericht onderzoek en praktijkcases laat zien en heeft partijen bij elkaar gebracht. De meerwaarde is mede erkend doordat tijdens de Pareltjesdag van het CoE KennisDC Logistiek, de learning community de publieksprijs 2023 in ontvangst heeft mogen nemen@en

In the coming years, cities will have to deal with transportation challenges in terms of accessibility and sustainability. Passenger and freight transport are expected to increase, while the transport sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and congestion in cities. Although historically both ecosystems (passenger transport and freight transport) were intertwined, the ecosystems have developed separately from each other over the past century. This research focuses on finding integrated logistics flows and logistics innovations and especially finding the conditions under which these can be added to different types of mobility hubs. By collecting and structuring information from literature and interviews using a requirement analysis, possible logistics additions and associated conditions are mapped into frameworks. The results show that small consumer goods flows have the highest potential to be added to mobility hubs. In addition, the frameworks show that they can be used as a first step in the analysis to investigate which logistics functions and under which conditions these could have potential on a mobility hub. Further research can, preferably quantitatively, examine whether the suggested logistics additions from the framework are applicable in more detailed areas. @en

Introduction: Autonomous delivery robots are a promising alternative for last-mile delivery. To realise successful implementation of delivery robots in public spaces, it is important to study the interaction between robots and the traffic environment. The traffic environment includes the physical infrastructure and the objects using it like cars and people.

Methods: This research proposes an assessment method to determine the readiness of a traffic environment for autonomous delivery robots. A conceptual model is proposed that includes the factors that determine this so-called “roboreadiness”. The two key components of the model are the performance of the robot in the traffic environment and its social acceptance. A real-life experimental test case, expert interviews, and a survey are used to refine and validate the framework.

Results: The real-life test case showed for the basic variant a sufficient level both on performance and social acceptance. All other variants such as pillars, road narrowing, and bends did not lead to sufficient performance or social acceptance levels.

Discussion: The main outcome of this research is an assessment framework which allows to quantitatively assess traffic performance and social acceptance of sidewalk automated delivery robots. Suggestions for future work include further detailing and elaboration of the approach, scaling up experiments, and researching the possible influence of social acceptance on traffic performance.@en

Pressure on more sustainable transport and increased congestion provide
opportunities for intermodal transport, but it suffers from unreliable transport times due to a lack of coordination at the operational level. Synchromodal transport can mitigate this effect by taking an integral perspective. It appears that the majority of research to date has focused on the technical and operational challenges of synchromodal transport such as planning and supporting IT systems and platforms.
In this article, a synchromodal maturity model has been applied to 41 cases to gauge the current state of synchromodal transport from a complete perspective. @en

Several measures have been developed to prevent emissions from inland water transportation. However, it is challenging to weigh all the aspects to identify the pathway that will ultimately result in zero-emission inland shipping. A data-driven virtual representation of the inland shipping system can be used to evaluate zero-emission strategies, effectiveness of policies and technologies, and consequences of their implementation. This multi-level digital twin can realistically represent the system with all relevant components, which needs to be validated using real-world data. Subsequently, future scenarios can be imposed on the digital twin, and the proposed intervention measures can be applied, based on which their efficiency can be assessed together with the inland shipping sector. This study discusses the essential aspects of designing a digital twin for an IWT. Three aspects are considered essential: individual ships, logistics chains, and infrastructure. As these research topics span various scales, ranging from a single vessel to an entire infrastructure network, an agent-based approach is suitable for forming the basis of the digital twin. Consequently, potential interventions can be considered, ranging from the application of new technologies to individual vessels to policy measures implemented for an entire shipping corridor or various bunker infrastructure strategies in the network. Additionally, the impact of the implemented interventions can be evaluated at any desired scale, ranging from the individual ship level and its emissions to the network level and aggregated emissions in an entire area, or the impact on the logistics chain.@en

Dit artikel richt zich op de ontwikkeling van een onderzoeksagenda voor Greenining Corridors waarin het verduurzamen van achterlandverbindingen centraal staat. Het verduurzamen van de corridors wordt breed ingestoken langs een drietal thema’s (1) betere benutting van capaciteit; (2) schone, veilige en autonome modaliteiten; (3) Digitalisering in de toeleveringsketen. De totstandkoming van de onderzoeksagenda binnen de thema’s heeft plaatsgevonden door triangulatie van literatuuronderzoek en discussie met experts uit het Greening Corridor consortium. Onder vergroening van achterlandcorridors wordt verstaan duurzame logistieke corridors te ontwikkelen en te bevorderen zodanig dat de uitstoot van CO2 en andere schadelijke stoffen uit de logistieke sector drastisch verminderd wordt (waar mogelijk naar nul uitstoot) door toepassing van nieuwe technologieën gericht op de achterlandverbindingen van North Sea Port, Rotterdam, Amsterdam en Antwerpen. This contribution proposes a future research agenda for the sustainable development of the freight corridors for the next five years. This is done by discussing three themes. i.e. (1) use of capacity, (2) lower impact modalities and (3) digitalization of the supply chain. As the corridors can be seen as the connecting lifelines of our ports and our cities (respectively distribution centres), the research topics in the agenda are quite important for the development and well-being of our future generation.@en
