For several years, the importance of a neighborhood-specific approach to tackling overweight has been emphasized. However, to date, no simulation model has been encountered that provides insight into the determinants of becoming overweight in a specific neighborhood. It is therefore difficult for policymakers to decide on a set of appropriate policy interventions to reduce overweight in their neighborhood. In this study, a System Dynamics model was constructed to provide insight into which factors play a role in the problem and to what extent with the Schildersbuurt in The Hague as an example. Implementation of policy interventions as experiments in the model has shown that an integrated approach of both targeting energy intake and energy expenditure yields the best results considering possible future situations. More research into neighborhood-specific data for parameters input in the model and the suitability of the model to support policy advice in other neighborhoods is recommended.
