This book presents a huge number of contributions on corporate and public real estate management, urban development management, design and construction management and housing. These topics correspond with the names of the four sections of the Department of Management in the Built Environment at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft, the Netherlands. The book is a Liber Amicorum for prof. Hans de Jonge to mark his farewell as professor of real estate management and development. Due to the special role Hans de Jonge has had for over 25 years in our department the book includes many other contributions as well, from his former and current PhD candidates, university managers, and academic and professional colleagues from inside and outside the faculty. It offers a diversity of words of praise, personal memories, solid pieces of academic work, and reflections on the present, past and future of real estate management and development. As such the book presents a very interesting story of twenty five years of teaching and conducting research being started, guided and/or influenced by Hans de Jonge. This book presents state of the art theory and research on the added value of FM and CREM and explores 12 value parameters in depth, including cost, productivity, employee satisfaction, image, culture, health and safety, adaptability, risk, innovation and creativity, value of assets, sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility. It also presents 12 interviews with practitioners about how they cope with the concept of added value and how they manage and measure adding value in daily practice. During the last decades the perception and application of Facilities Management (FM) has gradually shifted from primarily steering on cost reduction towards managing of facilities as a strategic resource to add value to the organisation and its stakeholders and to contribute to its overall performance.
This book shows why and how this shift occurred and how the supply of facilities can or should be aligned to the different interests and needs of various stakeholders. It connects concepts, theoretical frameworks, research data and measurement tools from different countries and different disciplines, including Facilities Management, Corporate Real Estate Management, and Business to Business Marketing. The case studies explored different sectors such as offices, higher education, industry and health care. Much attention is being paid to value adding management, performance measurement and Key Performance Indicators covering economic issues, the needs and preferences of clients, customers and end users, shareholder value, relationship value, and sustainability.
The starting point for this international collaboration was the so-called FM Value Map that visualizes the links between input (resources), throughput (process), output (provisions) and outcomes i.e. the impact on the core business and the surroundings. The book ends up with many lessons learned, both from an academic and a practical point of view, and input for the future research agenda.
As such this book is appropriate to be used in academic research, educational settings and practical decision making.
The Added Value of FM is a result of an international collaboration between eighten authors representing the perspectives of seven nationalities. This report presents the experiences of students and staff during a study tour through Mexico City. This tour took place from June 28 till July 14, 2002, and has been organized by the Building Organization Student Society (BOSS). BOSS is the student’s organization of the Department of Real Estate and Project management of the Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology. The aim of the study tour was to extend the education program with research abroad. The tour focused on six themes: Mexican architecture, urban (re)development, ground politics, infrastructure & logistics in building construction, investment, and actors and interactions. After a chapter with facts and figures, all themes are briefly discussed. The report ends with some concluding remarks.@en
