State-of-the-art triple cation, mixed halide perovskites are extensively studied in perovskite solar cells, showing very promising performance and stability. However, an in-depth fundamental understanding of how the phase behavior in Cs_0.05FA_0.85MA_0.10Pb(I_0.97Br_0.03)₃ (CsMAFA) affects the optoelectronic properties is still lacking. The refined unit cell parameters a and c in combination with the thermal expansion coefficients derived from X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that CsMAFA undergoes an α–β phase transition at ≈280 K and another transition to the γ-phase at ≈180 K. From the analyses of the electrodeless microwave photoconductivity measurements it is shown that shallow traps only in the γ-phase negatively affect the charge carrier dynamics. Most importantly, CsMAFA exhibits the lowest amount of microstrain in the β-phase at around 240 K, corresponding to the lowest amount of trap density, which translates into the longest charge carrier diffusion length for electrons and holes. Below 200 K a considerable increase in deep trap states is found most likely related to the temperature-induced compressive microstrain leading to a huge imbalance in charge carrier diffusion lengths between electrons and holes. This work provides valuable insight into how temperature-dependent changes in structure affect the charge carrier dynamics in FA-rich perovskites.

In the quest for active and inexpensive (photo)electrocatalysts, atomistic simulations of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential for understanding the catalytic process of water splitting at solid surfaces. In this paper, the enhancement of the OER by first-row transition-metal (TM) doping of the abundant semiconductor ZnO was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations on a substantial number of possible structures and bonding geometries. The calculated overpotential for undoped ZnO was 1.0 V. For TM dopants in the 3d series from Mn to Ni, the overpotentials decreased from 0.9 V for Mn and 0.6 V for Fe down to 0.4 V for Co, and rose again to 0.5 V for Ni and 0.8 V for Cu. The overpotentials were analyzed in terms of the binding to the surface of the species involved in the four reaction steps of the OER. The Gibbs free energies associated with the adsorption of these intermediate species increased in the series from Mn to Zn, but the difference between OH and OOH adsorption (the species involved in the first, respectively the third reaction step) was always in the range 3.0–3.3 eV, despite a considerable variation in possible bonding geometries. The bonding of the O intermediate species (involved in the second reaction step), which is optimal for Co, and to a somewhat lesser extend for Ni, then ultimately determined the overpotential. These results implied that both Co and Ni are promising dopants for increasing the activity of ZnO-based anodes for the OER.

We calculate from first principles the optical spectra of the hydrides in the sodium alanate hydrogen storage system: NaH, NaAlH4, and Na 3AlH6. In particular we study the effects of systematic improvements of the theoretical description. To benchmark the calculations we also measure the optical response of a thin film of NaH. The simplest calculated dielectric functions are based upon independent electrons and holes, whose spectrum is obtained at the G0W0 level. Successive improvements consist of including partial self-consistency (so-called GW 0) and account for excitonic effects, using the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). Each improvement gives a sizable blue shift or red shift of the dielectric functions, but conserves the trend in the optical gap among different materials. Whereas these shifts partially cancel at the highest (GW 0-BSE) level of approximation, the shape of the dielectric functions is strongly modified by excitonic effects. Calculations at the GW 0-BSE level give a good agreement with the dielectric function of NaH extracted from the measurements. It demonstrates that the approach can be used for a quantitative interpretation of spectra in novel hydrogen storage materials obtained via, e.g., hydrogenography.@en
