Deze publicatie van het Vlaams Architectuurinstituut presenteert een rijke selectie recent gerealiseerde projecten in woord en beeld. Een vijftigtal projecten wordt aan de hand van uitgebreid plannen- en fotomateriaal gedocumenteerd, en vormt de aanleiding voor een kritische reflectie op actuele ontwikkelingen in de Vlaamse architectuur. Het boek bundelt artikels die handelen over thema’s als de poëzie van utiliteitsgebouwen, de verantwoordelijk van architectuur voor het landschap, de exploratie van een nieuwe schaal en de eigenheid van architectuur uit Vlaanderen in het buitenland. De beeldessays, gerealiseerd door vier spraakmakende fotografen, delen een sterke interesse in de concrete, fysieke beleving van architectuur. Ze beschouwen het architecturale object niet als een statisch gegeven, maar als een wenkende ruimte die geëxploreerd, onderzocht, beproefd, gepeild moet worden.@en

In de moderne stad verplaatst zicht het leven van alledag zich steeds meer naar de binnenkant van gebouwen. De interieurs van de warenhuizen, markthallen, administratiegebouwen, musea of theaters worden onderdeel van de ervaring van de stedeling. Iedere binnenwereld van de stad heeft haar eigen karakter sfeer en representatieve architectonische taal waarmee de specifieke maatschappelijke betekenis wordt aangeduid. In de hedendaagse praktijk zijn deze verschillen grotendeels verdwenen; een logica van standaardisering laat verschillen in betekenis, maar ook in sfeer vervagen. Hoe spectaculairder de buitenkant van gebouwen, des te banaler schijnt hun binnenkant te worden. Dit nummer van OASE wil deze verdwijning niet registreren maar gaat daarentegen op zoek naar een reeks strategieën en ontwerpinstrumenten voor het publieke stedelijke interieur. De samenstellers gaan op zoek naar architectonische projecten voor binnenruimten die hun betekenis ontlenen aan een specifieke aanpak en een herkenbaar element van auteurschap vertonen. = In the modern city, everyday life is increasingly moving towards the inside of buildings. The interiors of department stores, market halls, administration buildings, museums or theatres are part of the experience of the urban dweller. Every inner world of the city has its own character atmosphere and representative architectural language that supports its specific societal significance. In contemporary practice, these differences have largely disappeared; the logic of standardization blurs differences in meaning, but also in atmosphere. The more the exterior of buildings is invested with spectacular gestures, the more banal their interiors seem to become. Rather than registering this disappearance, this issue of OASE examines a range of strategies and design instruments for the public urban interior. The editors look for architectural projects for interiors that derive their significance from a specific approach and show a recognizable element of authorship. @en

The city is permanently in transition. The material objects that compose the city are continuously subject to adjustments, improvements or replacements. A bridge is being restored, a window frame is being replaced and an office is transformed in apartments. The process of transformation has been part of the city ever since its origin and will continue as long as the city stands.

The Stadtbauhutte is an effort to make the city’s transformation process an
accessible project that is taken on collectively. A project that is making the transformation visible to the user of the city. The stadtbauhutte is a supporter of preservering material beauty and the craftsman’s competence. And the stadtbauhutte is encouraging the exchange of knowledge and skills.

The Factory and the Ruin is a graduation project that runs in parallel with the call for competition on the site of the Kulturforum so to extend the Neue Nationalgalerie by Mies van der Rohe.
The project is an attempt to both resolve the open-ended landscape of the Kulturforum and to simultaneously reflect upon the artistic production of the century
from which it emerged. For that, both architecture and curatorial practice are in dialogue to give spatial, material and technical representation to the contemporary art gallery, in order to explore
the possibilities of staging and to reduce the conflicts between space of production and space of representation typical of the museum genre.
The project offers a critical dialogue between the gallery spaces in adjacent to the architectural landmarks of the Kulturforum, the city of Berlin and its continuous flux of construction and deconstruction.
Working closely with history, its artefacts, and the traces left on the site, the extensive collection of modern art finds its shrine in a walled-shaded interior calibrated for several art conditions
which can be read as a reinterpretation of the space 'as found'.

Rotterdam, lange tijd het lelijke eendje onder de Nederlandse steden, heeft de afgelopen jaren een spectaculaire comeback gemaakt. De oplevering van iconische gebouwen als de Markthal, De Rotterdam en het nieuwe Centraal Station trok tot buiten de landsgrenzen de aandacht, het opwaarderen van het centrum werpt zijn vruchten af en voorheen kwakkelende stadswijken werden succesvol getransformeerd. Rotterdam is niet langer een onbekende, onbegrepen en onbeminde stad, maar staat plotseling vooral positief in de schijnwerpers. Die opleving van de stad heeft ook een keerzijde.@en
