Evaluating the temporal stability and risk of unsaturated soil slopes during rainfall is essential for early warning and emergency response to landslides. However, limited research has been conducted on the transition timing of sliding mechanisms, instability/failure time and the integration of sliding consequences into quantitative risk assessment. In order to extend the research in this field, the Random Finite Element Method (RFEM) is used in this paper to investigate the influence of spatial variability of hydraulic properties (related to the fundamental parameter porosity) on the temporal stability and risk of soil slopes subject to rainfall. The findings indicate that the advancing speed of the wetting front is more rapidly in zones with low porosity than that in zones with high porosity. As rainfall progresses, the sliding mechanism of the slope shifts from deep sliding to shallow sliding. The homogeneous case tends to underestimate the rise in groundwater levels, leading to an overestimation of slope stability. Hydraulic boundary conditions significantly affect slope stability, making it crucial to consider horizontal (or near the toe of the slope) drainage conditions in practical applications. Additionally, the time of instability/failure predicted in the homogeneous case may be delayed compared to the actual conditions. Both probability of instability/failure and risk increase with continued rainfall. Compared to scenarios where the spatial variability of internal friction angle is not considered, the probability of instability/failure and risk will be higher when the spatial variability of internal friction angle is additionally considered. Risk-based assessment can define the risk levels, reflecting the severity of sliding consequences. Furthermore, the Malin slope failure record from the Chibo region of India is used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The probabilities of slope failure align well with actual observations, and the risk-based assessment provides additional information into the Malin landslide. This paper proposes a general model for studying the performance of heterogeneous slopes subject to rainfall, providing valuable guidance for landslide early warning systems and the scope and timing of emergency measures taken.

The root zone is a vital part of the Earth system and a key element in hydrology, ecology, agronomy, and land surface processes. However, its definition varies across disciplines, creating barriers to interdisciplinary understanding. Moreover, characterizing the root zone is challenging due to a lack of consensus on definitions, estimation methods, and their merits and limitations. This opinion paper provides a holistic definition of the root zone from a hydrology perspective, including its moisture storage, deficit, and storage capacity. We demonstrate that the root zone plays a critical role in the biosphere, pedosphere, rhizosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere, and cryosphere of the Earth system. We underscore the limitations of the traditional reductionist approach in modelling this complex and dynamic zone and advocate for a shift towards a holistic, ecosystem-centred approach. We argue that a holistic approach offers a more systematic, simple, dynamic, scalable, and observable way to describe and predict the role of the root zone in Earth system science.@en

Amplified eruptive outbreaks of bark beetles as a consequence of climate change can cause tree mortality that significantly affects terrestrial water and carbon fluxes. However, the lack of field-scale observations of underlying physiological mechanisms currently hampers the expression of such ecosystem disturbances in predictive modelling. Based on a unique flux tower dataset from a subalpine forest located in the Rocky Mountains, mechanisms of stomatal response to an extensive bark beetle outbreak were investigated using various models and parametrizations. The datasets cover a decade, including the periods of pre-infestation, infestation, and post-infestation. Field measurements showed considerable decreases in evapotranspiration (ET), transpiration (T), and leaf area index (LAI) during the two-year infestation period compared to the pre-infestation period. Model interpretations of observed water and carbon fluxes indicated that the overall reductions in T were not solely due to decreased LAI, but also to changes in physiological behaviours. The summer season's canopy-scale stomatal conductance was significantly reduced during the infestation period, from 0.0018 to 0.0011 m s⁻¹. One primary reason for the observed variations is likely that the bark beetle infestation hampers the water transport in the xylem. The damage of xylem has important implications for water use efficiency (WUE), which also significantly influences the parameterization of stomatal conductance. When using stomatal conductance models to forecast ecosystem dynamics, it is crucial to recalibrate the model's parameters to ensure the accurate depiction of stomatal dynamics during various infestation periods. The neglect of the temporal variability of canopy-scale stomatal conductance under ecosystem disturbances (e.g., bark beetle infestations) in current earth system models, therefore, requires specific attention in assessments of large-scale water and carbon balances.
