We develop a Korteweg-De Vries (KdV) theory for weakly nonlinear waves in discontinuously stratified two-layer fluids with a generally prescribed rotational steady current. With the help of a classical asymptotic power series approach, these models are directly derived from the divergence-free incompressible Euler equations for unidirectional free surface and internal waves over a flat bed. Moreover, we derive a Burns condition for the determination of wave propagation speeds. Several examples of currents are given; explicit calculations of the corresponding propagation speeds and KdV coefficients are provided as well.

We present a comprehensive introduction and overview of a recently derived model equation for waves of large amplitude in the context of shallow water waves and provide a literature review of all the available studies on this equation. Furthermore, we establish a novel result concerning the local well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem for space-periodic solutions with initial data from the Sobolev space H^s on the circle for s>3∕2.

Our aim is to study the effect of a continuous prescribed density variation on the propagation of ocean waves. More precisely, we derive KdV-type shallow water model equations for unidirectional flows along the Equator from the full governing equations by taking into account a prescribed but arbitrary depth-dependent density distribution. In contrast to the case of constant density, we obtain for each fixed water depth a different model equation for the horizontal component of the velocity field. We derive explicit formulas for traveling wave solutions of these model equations and perform a detailed analysis of the effect of a given density distribution on the depth-structure of the corresponding traveling waves.

Motivated by the question whether higher-order nonlinear model equations, which go beyond the Camassa-Holm regime of moderate amplitude waves, could point us to new types of waves profiles, we study the traveling wave solutions of a quasilinear evolution equation which models the propagation of shallow water waves of large amplitude. The aim of this paper is a complete classification of its traveling wave solutions. Apart from symmetric smooth, peaked and cusped solitary and periodic traveling waves, whose existence is well-known for moderate amplitude equations like Camassa-Holm, we obtain entirely new types of singular traveling waves: periodic waves which exhibit singularities on both crests and troughs simultaneously, waves with asymmetric peaks, as well as multi-crested smooth and multi-peaked waves with decay. Our approach uses qualitative tools for dynamical systems and methods for integrable planar systems.@en
