The autocorrelations receiver (AcR) is a suboptimum low-complexity receiver architecture particularly suited to ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems. As the bit rate increases, interference among pulses due to multipath propagation causes serious impairments of the AcR's performance. To mitigate this effect, we propose an appropiate design of the chip code and of the delayhopping (DH) code. We provide conditions to be satisfied by the DH code in order to reduce the nonlinear intersymbol interferene (ISI) and the bias term, which are peculiar nuisance parameters of autocorrelation receivers. By extending the length of the chip code, we show that Np transmitted pulses per symbol can be employed to suppress the average linear ISI of Np - 1 previous symbols.Simulated results confirm the performance improvement in terms of bit-error rate. However, in previous work it has been shown that the noise power linearly increases with Np. Although a large number of pulses per symbol is favorable for ISI mititgation, we show that the transmission of a single pulse minimizes the probability of error, for bit rates lower than an upper bound depending on the channel root mean-square delay spread and on the noise power.@en

This paper combines the modeling of transmitted-reference (TR) systems with autocorrelation receivers as Volterra equivalent systems models, and the statistical characterizaiton of the inter-pulse-interference due to multipath propagation. We obtain the statistics of the Volterra model coefficients as a function of system and channel parameters. In its generic form, the analysis can be used for numerical performance evaluations of TR systems. It is also expected to be useful for the optimization of signal processing tasks in TR receivers, where such statistical knowledge can be exploited. Examples are Volterra channel estimation or synchronization. Specializing the analysis to the elementary dual-pulse TR scheme scheme, closed-form expressions are obtained for various performance metrics, which directly indicate the trade-off between different system choices.@en

The Transmitted-Reference (TR) signaling scheme in conjunction with the Auto-corrrelation Reciever (AcR) has gained popularity in the last few years as low-complexity systems architecture for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) communications. Since the signal template used for the demodulation is directly obtained form the received signal not only the noise but also the interference caused by a narrowband (NB) system operating in the same bandwidth corrupt both the data and the reference pulses. In this paper we study the effects of single-tone interferer on the performance of a TR system, measured in terms of probability of error. We also propose to use a bank of notch filters for the detection and the suppression of the NB signal.@en
