This paper shows results of an observation of overtaking frequency on two-lane road and discusses the effects of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on this frequency. ADAS has potential to assist a driver with the overtaking task. To this end, more insight into the overtaking process, in particular overtaking frequency and explanatory factors, is required. Observations of overtaking frequency on both lanes of a two lane rural road show that the frequency is more dependent on the directional split of the traffic in the two driving directions than on the total flow on the road. Trucks are overtaken by many other vehicles if the opposing direction is less busy, whereas this number drops drastically if the opposing direction is busier than the driving direction.@en
