Abstract

In the spring of 1929 an exhibition of the Regional Plan for Zuid-Holland-West, the western part of the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland, was opened in The Hague. Unlike suggested by the exposition's title, the presentation was not about a plan, but about a survey: a set of data to be used as the basis for the design of a regional plan. In the Netherlands, the results of this kind of research had never been shared with the public before. The survey did not lead directly to the drafting of a regional plan for the region, but following the survey, two (unpublished) research reports for a regional plan for IJsselmonde and Westland were drawn up. The exhibited survey has also been of important relevance to the professionalization and scientific approach of urban and regional planning.
