Abstract
The chapter studies European metropolises through important literary texts of the early 20th century. The selected texts document through a phenomenological perspective characteristics, atmospheres, and events of the public space. Cities are not just a background against which the plot develops, but important characters whose presence influences the decisions and movements of the heroes.
