Aquatic biodiversity hotspots often emerge in regions with active tectonism, diverse climate conditions and complex basin configurations enabling episodic biotic isolation and exchange. The Anatolian microcontinent, located between the Mediterranean and Pontocaspian regions, has been considered a cradle of biodiversity for continental aquatic organisms. The Denizli Basin succession of SW Anatolia contains a “Didacna” mollusc fauna that could be the precursor of the modern Pontocaspian mollusc faunas of the Black Sea-Caspian Sea regions. However, the appearance of Pontocaspian faunas in the Denizli Basin and constraints upon their ages and dispersal pathways remain enigmatic. Moreover, the emergence of the Pontocaspian biota far into the Anatolian continental interior raises questions regarding the connectivity history and tectonic evolution of the Anatolian, Aegean and Pontocaspian realms. Here, we present an integrated stratigraphy of the ∼1 km thick succession of the Kolankaya Formation of the Denizli Basin, previously assigned to the Late Miocene. To date the first occurrence of Pontocaspian fauna in the Denizli Basin and to characterise accompanying palaeoenvironmental/palaeohydrological changes, we focus on three sets of approaches: dating (magnetostratigraphy and ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar), biotic record (molluscs, ostracods and dinoflagellates) and hydrological connectivity (O- and C-isotopes and ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr). We date the studied section as Early Pleistocene, spanning a time range of 2.6 Ma to 0.7 Ma. During that time, the Denizli Basin hosted an isolated to partially hydrologically open oligo-to mesohaline lake. The biotic record shows a drastic turnover of mollusc fauna from endemic Aegean-Anatolian and Pannonian/Paratethyan to Pontocaspian affinity at ∼1.8 Ma. The palaeogeographic evolution of the region, along with the geographically limited appearance of the Pontocaspian faunas, suggests a dispersal pathway from the Black Sea Basin via the Aegean Basin. Subsequently, a short incursion into the Denizli Basin may have occurred via a series of graben-type basins: either via the Söke-Milet Basin – Büyük Menderes Graben or via Izmir Bay – Gediz Graben. Our study shows that the Denizli Basin was not a cradle but rather a sink of the Pontocaspian biota during the Early Pleistocene. The new Early Pleistocene age assignment for the Pontocaspian fauna and the Kolankaya Formation in Denizli calls for a major reappraisal of models for the tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of SW Anatolia, including the regional interbasinal connectivity history.

The Pontocaspian (Black Sea - Caspian Sea) region has a very dynamic history of basin development and biotic evolution. The region is the remnant of a once vast Paratethys Sea. It contains some of the best Eurasian geological records of tectonic, climatic and paleoenvironmental change. The Pliocene-Quaternary co-evolution of the Black Sea-Caspian Sea is dominated by major changes in water (lake and sea) levels resulting in a pulsating system of connected and isolated basins. Understanding the history of the region, including the drivers of lake level and faunal evolution, is hampered by indistinct stratigraphic nomenclature and contradicting time constraints for regional sedimentary successions. In this paper we review and update the late Pliocene to Quaternary stratigraphic framework of the Pontocaspian domain, focusing on the Black Sea Basin, Caspian Basin, Marmara Sea and the terrestrial environments surrounding these large, mostly endorheic lake-sea systems.@en

The Caspian Sea, the largest isolated lake in the world, witnessed drastic lake-level variations during the Quaternary. This restricted basin appears very sensitive to lake-level variations, due to important variations in regional evaporation, precipitation and runoff. The amplitude, frequency and drivers of these lake-level changes are still poorly documented and understood. Studying geological records of the Caspian Sea might be the key to better comprehend the complexity of these oscillations. The Hajigabul section documents sediment deposited on the northern margin of the Kura Basin, a former embayment of the Caspian Sea. The 2035 m thick, well-exposed section was previously dated by magneto-biostratigraphic techniques and provides an excellent record of Early Pleistocene environmental, lake-level and climate changes. Within this succession, the 1050 m thick Apsheronian regional stage, between ca 2·1 Ma and 0·85 Ma, represents a particular time interval with 20 regressive sequences documented by sedimentary and palaeontological changes. Sequences are regressing from offshore to coastal, lagoonal or terrestrial settings and are bounded by abrupt flooding events. Sediment reveals a low energy, wave-dominated, reflective beach system. Wave baselines delimiting each facies association appear to be located at shallower bathymetries compared to the open ocean. Water depth estimations of the wave baselines allow reconstruction of a lake-level curve, recording oscillations of ca 40 m amplitude. Cyclostratigraphic analyses display lake-level frequency close to 41 kyr, pointing to allogenic forcing, dominated by obliquity cycles and suggesting a direct or indirect link with high-latitude climates and environments. This study provides a detailed lake-level curve for the Early Pleistocene Caspian Sea and constitutes a first step towards a better comprehension of the magnitude, occurrence and forcing mechanisms of Caspian Sea lake-level changes. Facies models developed in this study regarding sedimentary architectures of palaeocoastlines affected by repeated lake-level fluctuations may form good analogues for other (semi-)isolated basins worldwide.
