While there is a general recognition that breakthrough innovation is non-linear and requires an alignment between producers (supply) and users (demand), there is still a need for strategic intelligence about the emerging supply chains of new technological innovations. This technology delivery system (TDS) is an updated form of the TDS model and provides a promising chain-link approach to the supply side of innovation. Building on early research into supply-side TDS studies, we present a systematic approach to building a TDS model that includes four phases: (1) identifying the macroeconomic and policy environment, including market competition, financial investment, and industrial policy; (2) specifying the key public and private institutions; (3) addressing the core technical complements and their owners, then tracing their interactions through information linkages and technology transfers; and (4) depicting the market prospects and evaluating the potential profound influences on technological change and social developments. Our TDS methodology is illustrated using the field of Big Data & Analytics ("BDA").

Responsible research and innovation (RRI) has come to represent a change in the relationship between science, technology and society. With origins in the democratisation of science, and the inclusion of ethical and societal aspects in research and development activities, RRI offers a means of integrating society and the research and innovation communities. In this article, we frame RRI activities through the lens of layers of science and technology governance as a means of characterising the context in which the RRI activity is positioned and the goal of those actors promoting the RRI activities in shaping overall governance patterns. RRI began to emerge during a time of considerable deliberation about the societal and governance challenges around nanotechnology, in which stakeholders were looking for new ways of integrating notions of responsibility in nanotechnology research and development. For this reason, this article focuses on nanotechnology as the site for exploring the evolution and growth of RRI.@en

Innovations around "Big Data" can be characterized in terms of rapid technology development and deployment dynamics. For this purpose, combining "tech mining" (extraction of usable intelligence) from publication and patent databases with tech mining of business-related databases can elucidate activities and interests of business communities regarding Big Data innovation pathways. In this paper, we focus on commercially oriented databases - ABI/INFORM as a source from which to extract business intents. We select the database to help gauge "hot topics" in industry with regard to Big Data. Our results show that certain types of firms can be clustered into thematic groups relating to Big Data discussions and activities. In the paper we demonstrate that such analyses can illuminate themes being pursued by businesses. Like social media analyses, this text mining can provide useful intelligence to inform more in-depth investigation mobilizing other data sources and techniques.

This paper takes as its point of departure the pressure for industry to take up the notionof ‘responsible development’ of nanotechnology when there is little clarity as to what thismight mean in practice. Due to increased complexity, actions to be taken cannot be simplyspecified. It is necessary to further articulate the issues of responsible development, assuch, and through learning by doing;it is on this point that interview data with industrialactors, collected in an earlier project (Shelley-Egan, 2011) are presented as a means ofunderstanding industry’s response to the pressures for responsible development ofnanotechnology, along with the articulation of further issues. The findings show that thereis differential uptake of pressure for responsible development, and ambiguities andattempts at their resolution. However, in new developments related to the responsible development of nanotechnology, one sees new practices and interactions which maycontribute to making the problem manageable at least.@en

The potential benefits of nanotechnologies in healthcare are widely expected to be enormous and a considerable amount of investment is already pouring into public research in this area. These high expectations of benefits are coupled with uncertainty surrounding the potential risks of the prospective products containing nanomaterials, in addition to concerns about the adequacy of regulatory oversight. These challenges add another level of uncertainty for those deciding to invest in nanotechnology R&D and threaten to impede product development and commercialisation. Nanotechnology in healthcare (often labelled as nanomedicine) presents a situation where waiting games are a strong possibility; however, waiting games have been avoided (so far) through the unlocking of the dominant regulation regime. This paper describes how an innovation impasse in nanomedicine could have ensued if the traditional wait and watch strategies of legislators and regulators had been followed. We describe how waiting games were avoided through the opening up and distribution of regulatory approaches.@en
