Systematic experimental investigations concerning the influence of α morphology on the fretting wear behaviors of metastable β titanium alloys are carried out. A Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al titanium alloy was subjected to different heat treatment routes to create dual phase microstructures consisted of β phase plus α phase with three different morphologies. The effect of α morphology on the fretting wear resistance, the resulting failure mechanisms, and stress induced martensite transformation (SIMT) were unraveled. Results show that the α morphology has a significant influence on fretting wear behaviors depending on the fretting run regimes. In the partial slip regime (PSR) and mixed fretting regime (MFR), the microstructure with lath α morphology has a lowest fretting wear volume accompanied by relatively strong SIMT effect. While in gloss slip regime (GSR), the globular α microstructure has a lowest fretting wear volume along with strongest SIMT response, yet a highest fretting wear volume for the acicular α morphology microstructure due to its brittleness nature. The subsurface observations demonstrates that a compacted and thick plastic deformation layer, especially for the mechanical mixture layer, can well protect the material surface against the fretting wear damage.

A systematic experimental investigation concerning the fretting-induced tribo-chemical state and its effect on the fretting wear behavior of titanium alloys under the vacuum atmospheres (4 × 10^–3 Pa and 4 × 10^–1 Pa) in different fretting regimes is reported. An in situ XPS analysis tester was developed to capture the real tribo-chemical state of worn surface for all test conditions. Results show that samples subjected to different vacuum atmospheres have varied tribo-chemical states depending on the fretting regime, which play significantly different roles in determining the associated damage mechanisms and the resulting fretting wear resistance. Under both vacuum atmospheres, in the partial slip regime (PSR) the worn scars were mainly covered by TiO₂, showing comparable levels of very slight damage, while in the mixed fretting regime (MFR), the tribo-layer is still mainly consisted of TiO₂, but with an evident peak of Ti metal for the high vacuum degree (4 × 10^–3 Pa) in MFR, showing a mild damage. In contrast, in the gross slip regime (GSR), Ti metal was prone to be oxidized to Ti₂O₃ and TiO on the worn scar, especially for the low vacuum degree (4 × 10^–1 Pa) having a highest content of Ti₂O₃. It might be inferred that the tribo-layer containing more Ti₂O₃ formed during fretting wear process is susceptible to be broken, hence showing a highest fretting wear volume in GSR for the low vacuum degree. The results suggest that for the vacuum environments, the Ti6Al4V may be more suitable to be used under the high vacuum atmosphere.

Systematic experimental investigations were conducted to study the microstructures and impact toughness of each heat affected zone (HAZ) formed during rail flash-butt welding. A high-strength carbide-free bainitic rail steel was subjected to different thermal simulation cycles to separately reproduce each HAZ subzone by tailoring the peak temperature (PT) with respect to 700, 850, 920, 1000 and 1350 °C, and hence to generate the corresponding microstructures by using Gleeble-3500 simulator. Results show that the HAZ subzones exhibit complicated microstructures depending on the PTs, and with increasing PT the dominant bainitic microstructure type evolves from polygonal bainitic ferrite (700 °C) to a mixture of fine bainitic ferrite and granular bainite (850–1000 °C), and finally to coarse bainitic ferrite and granular bainite (1350 °C). Impact tests demonstrate that the impact toughness initially increases significantly as the PT reaches 920 °C (i.e., fine-grained HAZ), beyond which the impact toughness starts to decrease. The fine-grained HAZ displays optimal impact toughness in HAZs, yet which is lower than the base metal. Moreover, the morphology and distribution of martensite-austenite (M-A) constituents is strongly dependent on the welding PT, and the high fraction blocky and coarse slender M-A constituents is considered to be detrimental for the impact toughness.

In this work, an in-situ XPS analysis test combined self-designed high precision fretting wear tester was carried out to study the fretting wear behavior and the resulting tribo-oxidation of thermal-oxidation film on Ti6Al4V titanium alloy under the varied working atmosphere. The fretting-induced tribo-oxidation under the air and vacuum (4 × 10-3 Pa) environment was analyzed and its response on the resulting fretting wear resistance and damage mechanism was discussed. Results show that the working environment plays a significant role in the formation of tribo-oxidation and then determining the fretting wear resistance. Thermal-oxidation film in the vacuum atmosphere shows a better fretting wear resistance than that in the air atmosphere for all fretting regimes, except for partial slip regime (PSR) where there is an equivalent fretting wear resistance. Compared with the substrate Ti6Al4V titanium alloy, the thermal-oxidation film in the vacuum atmosphere performs a good protection for titanium alloy, especially for slip regime (SR), but not applied for air atmosphere.

In the present work, three different scratch tests are compared on their ability to rank the abrasion resistance of low alloy steels for industrial applications where the abrasion play a key role, e.g., in earthmoving, agricultural and mining equipment. The first test involves single pass scratching of pristine surfaces with a relatively large rigid indenter. The second test involves multi-pass scratching along a fixed track using the same large indenter. The third test involves the creation of a multi-pass scratch track using the same large indenter followed by final scratching of the abrasion track with a sharp indenter, i.e., Multi-Pass Dual Indenter (MPDI) scratch test. The three test protocols activate different abrasion mechanisms. Five low alloy construction steel grades with different strain hardening capabilities, i.e., Interstitial-free Ferritic steel (IF steel), Fully Martensitic steel (FM steel), Dual Phase steel (DP steel), Quench Partitioning steel (Q&P steel) and TWining Induced Plasticity steel (TWIP steel), are used. The results show that for both single (large) indenter scratch test protocols, the scratch depths always increase with indenter load and the failure mechanism is pure ploughing except for the IF steel due to the nature of softness. While for the dual-indenter scratch test, the scratch depth is a more complex function of the load applied during creation of the work hardened surface layer. The conventional scratch test protocols cannot well reveal micro-cracks and defect in (sub) surface and cannot well reflect the real response of strain hardening of steels. However, the MPDI test can distinguish between different steels with different initial hardness and different strain hardening behaviour and reveal the damage and, equally important, can indicate how average loading conditions may affect the relative abrasion resistance of construction steels during steady state conditions.

An experimental investigation of the scratch and abrasive wear behaviour of a lean C-Mn construction steel in its tempered fully martensitic (TM) state is presented. The scratch resistance and the corresponding failure mechanisms as a function of the tempering temperature (200-500 °C) were evaluated using a multi-pass dual-indenter (MPDI) scratch test applying different loading conditions. Results show that the scratch resistance depends not only on the tempering temperature, but also on the load applied during scratching. The optimal tempering temperature depends on the applied load. For both low and high loading conditions, the dual phase (ferrite-martensite) variant with an optimised martensite volume fraction and morphology yields an even better combination of scratch/abrasion resistance and hardness. The scratch resistance at different loading conditions is linked to the strength coefficient K in the Hollomon equation (σ=Kεⁿ). The scratch behaviour in the MPDI scratch test at a low load correlates quite well with the standard ASTM G65 multi-particle abrasion test.

In the literature many researchers have tried to correlate the (dry) abrasion resistance of steels to their standard mechanical properties as determined in simple tensile and hardness testing. However, many unclear or even conflicting correlations have been reported, in part due to small data sets being used, different testing methods and relatively simple data processing techniques. In the present work 40 different low alloy steels were tested using the same ASTM G65 abrasion test and standard mechanical testing. The data set consists of 20 samples having the same chemical composition yet processed to different microstructures and different mechanical properties, as well as 20 steel grades with various compositions but having mechanical properties comparable to the first data set. The results show that for steels of the same composition significantly higher correlations between the abrasion resistance and certain mechanical properties (in particular strength coefficient K, hardness and UTS) are observed than those for steels having different compositions. In case both data sets were combined and a new regression analysis was applied, the quality of the correlation dropped significantly and the correlations became barely statistically relevant. Furthermore, when taking into account the measurement errors in both independent and dependent variables, the correlation coefficient became even worse and no statistically relevant correlation was observed at all. The current study clearly casts doubts on the validity of reported correlations between material (mechanical) properties and abrasion resistance.
