Bubble screens are used at sea locks to mitigate salt intrusion into inland water systems. In this paper the effectiveness of a bubble screen in delaying the mixing of salt and freshwater via lock exchange was studied. Laboratory-scale experiments investigating the flow field and mixing caused by a bubble screen are presented. The tests include both the homogeneous situation of freshwater on both sides of the screen and the inhomogeneous situation where there is an initial density difference across the screen, which leads to a density current after the lock gate is removed or opened. Optical measurement techniques were applied, giving spatially detailed flow velocities and densities. The parameters varied between tests are the airflow discharge and the bubble size. The results show that the bubble size in the screen had a significant effect with a screen with bubbles of 1-2 mm being more effective at generating a surface flow in the homogeneous case but less effective at keeping the fresh and salt sides separated in the inhomogeneous case, when compared with a screen of 4-6 mm bubbles. The point of maximum effectiveness for separating salt and fresh sides was also shown to be dependent on bubble size.

Hydraulic structures can be a promising place for tidal energy extraction due to the high flow velocities, easy access to the power grid and easy access for maintenance. However, quantification of the impacts of a tidal power plant in a hydraulic structure is not straight forward. In 2015 a pilot plant consisting of an array of five Tocardo tidal turbines was installed in the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier in the Netherlands. This pilot was accompanied by monitoring studies to verify that the operation of the plant had no adverse impact on the barrier and its surroundings. This paper presents the assessment of the hydraulic impact of the tidal power plant in the storm surge barrier based on an analysis of water level and current measurements, combined with numerical modeling and followed by an assessment of the environmental impact with emphasis on the effects on the intertidal areas in the estuary. This validation approach by a pilot plant is imperative to understand the interaction between tidal turbines and the hydraulic structure on the local scale. This understanding gives extra credibility to the predictions of the extrapolated large-scale and large array assessments which will always be fully numerical.

Recent constructions of large sea locks in the Netherlands at IJmuiden and Terneuzen have been accompanied by extensive hydraulic research, including physical scale model tests which took into account the effects of density differences across the lock heads during leveling operations. The case study presented here compares the situations and results from the studies of the two locations, and shows the importance of density effects in an accurate assessment of the hydrodynamic forces on the vessels and subsequently the forces on the mooring lines. Supposedly small differences in the local boundary conditions at the two locations lead to very different results, owing primarily to the differences in propagation of the density currents. Numerical models do not as yet predict this with sufficient accuracy. This further underlines the importance of doing extensive preliminary hydraulic investigations when designing large new shipping locks.

Salt water intrusion through the New Sea Lock of IJmuiden, Netherlands requires mitigation to ensure availability of enough fresh water further inland. For this purpose, a salt screen has been proposed for selective withdrawal of salt water from the Noordzeekanaal in the vicinity of the lock complex. Formulas to assess the withdrawal rate of selective withdrawal are based on idealized layouts and conditions. In the case of IJmuiden, the flow surrounding a salt screen has a strong nonuniform character, such that these formulas are not applicable to predict the correct withdrawal rate and the effectiveness of selective withdrawal accurately. In this case physical scale modeling or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling can be applied. This article discusses the limitations of the formulas for a three-dimensional (3D) flow application near the locks of IJmuiden and presents the use of CFD and physical scale model research to assess the flow patterns around the salt screen and the effectiveness of selective withdrawal. The CFD model was validated against the physical scale model and represented the complex flow fields around the salt screen to within acceptable deviations for both steady and transient states. This gives confidence in applying these more advanced modeling tools for the design and positioning of salt screens in confined complex 3D flow areas.

This paper investigates the effect of density differences on the forces acting on a moored vessel during lock operations, focusing on the effect of the position of the moored vessel in the lock chamber in the presence of density currents. The extensive scale-model research performed for the new sea lock in IJmuiden, The Netherlands has shown that the combination of density differences and an asymmetric layout of the moored vessel in the lock chamber may lead to high forces on the vessel that can largely exceed the allowable force limit. In particular, as a result of the density currents, forces in the transverse direction build up, pushing the vessel away from the chamber wall, during leveling and after opening the lock gate, leading to higher loads on the mooring lines. The forces caused by the density difference are the dominant forces and the performance of the leveling system cannot be assessed without taking this into account. Based on the results of the performed tests, criteria for achievable leveling times and allowable hydrodynamic forces during leveling are determined for the new sea lock of IJmuiden. Furthermore, the obtained results can be used for calibration or validation of numerical models that are valuable tools for the design of future locks.
