With the rapid urbanization and development of metropolises, urban road tunnels have been constructed at an increasing rate, significantly alleviating urban traffic pressure, and improving urban resilience. Fire hazards have become a major threat to modern road tunnels due to the growing popularity of electric vehicles and high-density transportation of goods, particularly flammable materials. Asphalt pavements, as an essential component of road tunnels, may release harmful effluences and smoke under high temperatures, exacerbating the fire and adding risk to life safety. It is hence critical to investigate fire-retarding asphalt materials and their potential use in urban road tunnels pavements. This paper provides a comprehensive review of fire-retarding asphalt pavements for urban road tunnel pavements. The review covers tunnel fire generation mechanisms, evaluation methods, flame retardants for asphalt pavements, and recent developments in flame retardant technologies. By investigating these aspects, this paper aims to better understand the flammability of asphalt mixtures and asphalt pavements in urban road tunnels, promote the research of flame-retardant technology, and ultimately reduce the damage and loss caused by asphalt road tunnel fire accidents. Additionally, this study identifies the limitations of current research and provides an outlook for future research to contribute to the resilience of urban road tunnel structures and the longer service life of asphalt pavement in semi-closed road tunnels.

One of the most widely used polymer-based modifiers in asphalt binders is styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS), which results in binders of increased modulus, strength, toughness, and resistance to permanent deformation. These properties are further improved with the increase of SBS polymer content in asphalt binders, producing binders such as high-content polymer-modified asphalt (HCPMA). Although the HCPMA binders commonly are used in porous asphalt pavements, limited research has been conducted on their aging performance. This paper used gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) to explore the evolution of chemical and rheological properties of aging HCPMA binders. The study found that the aging of HCPMA is a combination of oxidation of the base asphalt binder and degradation of the SBS polymer, leading to modulus increase and phase angle decrease. The degradation of SBS happened mostly at the beginning and slowed after pressure-aging vessel (PAV) conditioning for 20 h, which resulted in the lowest rutting resistance of HCPMA binders. When SBS content was higher than 7.5%, more than half the SBS polymer remained after 80 h of PAV conditioning. Although the molecular weight of SBS decreased from 230,000 to 70,000 due to degradation, its modification effect was still significant. Moreover, high modification of SBS can retard the oxidation and hardening of base asphalt binder, especially after PAV conditioning for 20 h. Principal component analysis showed that 10 parameters used in this study could be explained by SBS content and asphalt binder aging extent. Based on PCA results, the complex modulus (G∗) and phase angle (δ) of HCPMA binders can be well fitted by the exponential function of SBS content and aging index.

To meet the high temperature and anti-reveling properties required in open-graded friction course, high content polymer modified asphalt (HCPMA) is gradually widely used in China, but the rheological, chemical and aging characteristic is not clear yet. In this paper, HCPMA with different SBS content and different base asphalt are prepared, and Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) aging was conducted to simulate the long-term aging condition. The chemical and rheological evaluation of HCPMA before and after aging were tracked with Fourier transform infrared, gel permeation chromatography test, dynamic shear oscillatory test, master curve and multiple stress creep and recovery test. The results show that firstly, the aging of HCPMA is combined with hardening of asphalt and degradation of Styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) polymer. Furthermore, the addition of high content of SBS polymer can reduce the formation of carbonyl, but the degradation rate of SBS polymer is not related to the content of SBS or the type of base asphalt. Besides, HCPMA with a higher SBS content will have better rheological properties, but in consideration of economy, 9% is optimum dosage. At last, HCPMA prepared with Esso asphalt as base binder exhibits better rheological properties than HCPMA prepared with SK asphalt. However, the rheology difference reduces with the increase of SBS content and after PAV aging.
