METIS is one the first three instruments on the E-ELT. Apart from diffraction limited imaging, METIS will provide coronagraphy and medium resolution slit spectroscopy over the 3 - 19μm range, as well as high resolution (R ∼ 100,000) integral field spectroscopy from 2.9 - 5.3μm, including a mode with extended instantaneous wavelength coverage. The unique combination of these observing capabilities, makes METIS the ideal instrument for the study of circumstellar disks and exoplanets, among many other science areas. In this paper we provide an update of the relevant science drivers, the METIS observing modes, the status of the simulator and the data analysis. We discuss the preliminary design of the optical system, which is driven by the need to calibrate observations at thermal IR wavelengths on a six-mirror ELT. We present the expected adaptive optics performance and the measures taken to enable high contrast imaging. We describe the opto-mechanical system, the location of METIS on the Nasmyth instrument platform, and conclude with an update on critical subsystem components, such as the immersed grating and the focal plane detectors. In summary, the work on METIS has taken off well and is on track for first light in 2025.

Industrially applied Computational Fluid Dynamics still faces a challenge when it comes to the accurate prediction of the complex flow over realistic highlift configurations. In this paper we demonstrate that the flow over the 3-element RA16SC1 highlift configuration can be effciently and accurately predicted with Implicit Large-Eddy Simulation (ILES) on Cartesian adaptive grids. In ILES the truncation error of the numerical discretization itself functions as an implicit Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) model. To prove and enable industrial application of ILES, the underlying Cartesian grid of this simulation has been automatically generated and refined for resolving the relevant flow features. The wall-boundary condition is applied with a second-order Conservative Immersed Interface Method (CIIM). Effciency is further increased by modeling near-wall turbulence based on the Thin-Boundary-Layer Equation (TBLE). The good agreement with the respective experimental results underlines the suitability of this CFD approach for industrial applications.@en

In order to perform Implicit Large Eddy Simulation (ILES) on complex geometries at high Reynolds numbers, a wall model based on the simplified Thin Boundary Layer Equations (TBLE) is designed in the framework of ILES with a cut-cell finite-volume immersed boundary method. This wall model is validated for turbulent channel flow at friction Reynolds number up to Re_τ = 2,000 on very coarse grids. The results compared with DNS and LES without wall model show that the wall model has the potential to improve the mean velocity in the outer flow region well at high Reynolds number. The wall model is applied to a complex converging diverging channel flow at Reynolds number Re = 7,900 on very coarse meshes. Improved mean velocities and Reynolds stresses are obtained, which shows that the wall model has the ability to perform ILES on complex geometries at high Reynolds numbers.
